BDNF belongs to the neurotrophin family and acts on the TrkB receptor. It is especially important in the hippocampus and cortex, key regions for learning and memory, where it takes part in strengthening frequently used synapses.
Its levels change with physical activity, sleep, stress and age, and they have been found altered in various neurological and psychiatric conditions. That is why it is often used as a marker in studies of neuroprotection and cognitive function.
Among research peptides, Semax has been linked to increased BDNF expression in animal models, and Cerebrolysin, a mixture of brain-derived peptides, to neurotrophic-type effects.
An increase in BDNF measured in an experimental model is an intermediate marker, not a functional result. The relevant question is whether that change comes with measurable effects on function.
