Lyophilized synthetic peptides are remarkably stable if stored correctly. The main degradation comes from three factors: temperature, humidity and UV light.
Lyophilized: the most stable state
A lyophilized powder peptide sealed in its original vial can remain stable for:
- 2–4 weeks at room temperature (15–25 °C, humidity <60%), with no significant loss of activity.
- 6–12 months refrigerated (2–8 °C).
- 24+ months frozen at -20 °C.
- 5+ years at -80 °C for very long-term storage.
Reconstituted: a much shorter window
Once the diluent has been added, the clock is ticking. With bacteriostatic water and refrigeration (2–8 °C):
- Most peptides: 28–30 days.
- Peptides with disulfide bonds (oxytocin, somatostatin, etc.): 14 days.
- Especially labile peptides (some GHRH fragments): 7–14 days.
Frequent storage mistakes
- Repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Each cycle degrades a percentage of the peptide. Solution: aliquot when the batch arrives.
- Storing reconstituted material in a household freezer (-18 °C with defrost cycles). Periodic automatic defrosting exposes the vial to fluctuations that accelerate degradation.
- Leaving the reconstituted vial at room temperature between draws. Even if only for minutes, repeated over weeks it adds up to hours at room temperature.
Cold chain during shipping
NeoPeptidos ships its orders with thermal packaging (gel pack or dry ice depending on the destination) precisely because the cold chain is the guarantee that the batch you receive keeps the activity of the batch analyzed on the COA. On receipt:
- Check that the thermal packaging is still cold to the touch.
- Store immediately refrigerated (2–8 °C) or frozen depending on the final use of the batch.
- Do not open the lyophilized vial until the moment of use.
Recommended aliquoting protocol
For researchers who will use the batch over long periods, we recommend aliquoting after reconstitution:
- Reconstitute the whole vial with the total calculated volume.
- Distribute into individual sterile screw-cap vials (typically 0.2–0.5 mL each).
- Label with concentration, date and batch number.
- Freeze at -20 °C or -80 °C immediately.
- Thaw only the vial needed for each experiment.
Humidity: the forgotten factor
The lyophilizate is hygroscopic. If the vial is opened in an environment with humidity >60%, the powder can absorb water within minutes and begin to degrade even before reconstitution. In humid climates (much of Mexico), consider working in an air-conditioned room or at a bench with desiccant.
